Ingredients List

The following supplements, including the antioxidants found in AREDS2 capsules, have been shown to be beneficial for some people.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids. Carotenoids are pigments found in plants and in your retina. Supplementing these pigments helps increase their density in your retina. They also absorb high-energy blue and ultraviolet light that can damage your eyes.

Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring micronutrient which acts as a cofactor for mitochondrial enzyme activity. Due to its potential antioxidant activity, it is considered a "universal antioxidant". Previous studies reported the pharmacological benefits of ALA in the role of dry eye disease and diabetic retinopathy, two ocular diseases prevalent in diabetic patients.

Taurine
According to a 2014 review , taurine is the most plentiful amino acid in the retina of the eye and helps protect against retinal degeneration. The review also states that reduced amounts of taurine may play a role in eye disorders, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

NAC
NAC can help prevent vision loss and damage. Because it's so closely tied to glutathione, it's really no surprise that NAC can help to prevent losing your vision. NAC cal also treat blepharitis symptoms which include eyelid inflammation, irritation and redness in the eye. The data also suggests that NAC may be a novel treatment in rescuing retinal function and preventing vision loss secondary to retinal degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration.

Lycopene
Lycopene protects your eyes from oxidative stress that causes common eye diseases, making it one of the strongest eye vitamins you can consume. Lycopene may even have the ability to prevent or delay cataracts to a certain extent. Specifically, lycopene, thanks to its angiogenic activity, was found to be the only carotenoid that has been shown in different studies to protect ocular health, helping to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin attenuates molecules that signal inflammatory triggers, thus acting as an anti-inflammatory agent. It increases ocular blood flow velocity, allowing the blood to reoxygenate the tissues of the retina and eyeball and clear out toxins and waste more efficiently.
It has been reported that healthy people over 40 years, receiving astaxanthin once a day, significantly improved their uncorrected far visual acuity and the accommodation time significantly decreased.

Bilberry
Bilberry has been suggested as a treatment for retinopathy (damage to the retina) because anthocyanosides appear to help protect the retina. Bilberry has also exhibited protective effects against macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Ginkgo Balboa
Because the ginkgo biloba herb regulates blood flow and pressure, it can effectively help your vision. By keeping blood flow constant and intraocular eye pressure low, the herb can both help with preventing macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, as well as enhance your visual acuity.

Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue-green alga that became famous after it was successfully used by NASA as a dietary supplement for astronauts on space missions. It has the ability to modulate immune functions and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the release of histamine by mast cells.

Quercetin
Quercetin is a natural flavonoid antioxidant found in various plant sources and food samples. It is well known for its notable curative effects on the treatment of ophthalmic diseases due to various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrosis activities.

Zinc
Also found naturally in your eyes, zinc is a powerful antioxidant that protects against cell damage. Zinc is the primary mineral in the AREDS2 formulation. When taking zinc, copper absorption is lessened. It’s recommended that zinc be combined with copper supplements.

Vitamin A
One of the most important benefits vitamin A has for our eyes is reducing the risk of macular degeneration and vision loss. It also boosts the immune system, helping soothe eye inflammation and decreasing our chance of developing eye infections.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
Vitamin B1 is essential for the health of your eyes. Known as one of the “anti-stress” vitamins, vitamin B1 reduces inflammation. There’s evidence that vitamin B1, taken with other vitamins, may reduce your risk of getting cataracts, but more research is needed.

Vitamin C
Several large studies show that vitamin C reduces the risk of getting some types of cataracts.

The National Eye Institute conducted the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and the follow-on AREDS2 to study cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Study researchers tested whether taking nutritional supplements could prevent or slow these diseases. The formulations tested in the trials are now sold as the AREDS and the AREDS2 formulas.

AMD and cataract are leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in the United States. Risk dramatically increases after age 65.
AMD is a progressive disease of the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye called the retina. In later stages, AMD can lead to the loss of central vision and blindness.

Cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, which causes blurry vision and can lead to blindness. The condition is common during aging and is usually treated with surgery to replace the lens.

AREDS scientists found that people at high risk for developing advanced AMD—those with intermediate AMD, and those with advanced AMD in one eye only—reduced their risk of developing advanced by about 25 to 30 percent and also reduced the risk of central vision loss by 19% when treated with the AREDS 2 formula.
